ICAE Certification Requirements

The Intermodal Creative Arts Educator (ICAE) Certification Program requires the completion of General Education and Arts Area coursework, required reading, and a supervised practicum.

 

General Education Requirements

ICAE certification requires completion of 6 General Education courses:

  • ED001 Human Growth & Development Across the Lifespan
  • ED002 Theories of Education
  • ED003 Group Dynamics
  • ED004 Lesson Planning: A Survey
  • ED005¬†Learning, the Brain, & the Arts
  • ED006 Cultivating the Artist in the Educator

 

General Education courses that must be completed through CELA:

  • ED004 Lesson Planning: A Survey
  • ED005 Learning, the Brain, & the Arts
  • ED006 Cultivating the Artist in the Educator

 

Required Reading

ICAE certification training has a required reading component. All candidates must enroll in ED006 Required Reading in order to complete the reading work. There are three required reading titles and each title has an accompanying writing assignment. Students typically enroll in ED006 after completing their practicum.

 

Arts Area Coursework Requirements

Every ICAE candidate is required to select a primary arts area and two secondary arts areas within which they will focus their practicum work. Intermodal creative arts involves moving among different arts areas when working. ICAE certification requires the arts area coursework to be in classes whose primary focus is in an arts area and not arts-in-education.

 

CELA requires the following minimum number of contact hours for each arts area of focus:

  • 50 contact hours in a primary arts area
  • 20 contact hours in a secondary arts area
  • 20 contact hours in an additional secondary arts area

 

CELA currently offers online courses in the following arts areas:

  • Visual arts
  • Music
  • Language arts
  • Creative writing
  • Independent study

Each CELA online course is 30 hours

 

Supervised Practicum

ICAE certification requires completion of an 8-week practicum with a minimum of 16 hours of individual supervision. Candidates enroll in ED007 ArtsEd Practicum in order to complete the supervised practicum requirements.

CELA’s ICAF, ICAT, and ICAE Certification Programs meet the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association (IEATA) supervision and training from an Expressive Arts Institute requirement for the Registered Expressive Arts Consultant/Educator (REACE) credential and the Registered Expressive Arts Therapist (REAT) credential.
