The CELA academic year runs approximately September 1st through June 30th and is made up of four, 10-week sessions. The Intermodal Creative Arts Therapist (ICAT) Certification Program requires the completion of General Education and Arts Area coursework, required readings, and a supervised fieldwork component. CELA classes are all online. Each online class is 30 contact hours. Students must pass each CELA online course with a grade of B- or higher in order to receive their certification.

Arts Area Requirement
Every ICAT candidate is required to select a primary arts area and two secondary arts areas within which they will focus their fieldwork. Intermodal Creative Arts involves moving among different arts areas when working with clients. ICAT certification requires the arts area coursework to be in classes whose primary focus is in an arts area and not in arts-in-therapy.

CELA requires the following minimum number of contact hours for each arts area of focus:
- 50 contact hours in a primary arts area (2 classes)
- 25 contact hours in a secondary arts area (1 class)
- 25 contact hours in an additional secondary arts area (1 class)

Required Reading
ICAT certification training has a required reading component. All candidates must enroll in PY011 Required Reading in order to complete the reading work. Each required reading title has an assigned writing component that students must complete. Several of the required reading titles are required reading in other CELA online courses. Titles need to be read only once.

Supervised Fieldwork Requirement
Facilitation Skills
ICAT certification requires completion of a supervised fieldwork component. We offer two tracks for the supervised fieldwork in order to accommodate the different training backgrounds candidates may have:

Track A: 200-hour supervised fieldwork
Candidates who have a graduate degree in psychology, educational psychology, counseling, social work, marriage and family therapy, or a related mental health discipline. This track has a 200 hour fieldwork requirement with a minimum of 25 individual supervision hours.

Track B: 500-hour supervised fieldwork
Candidates who have a graduate degree in a creative arts area, for example, visual arts, music, dance, writing, theater arts. This track has a 500 hour fieldwork requirement with a minimum of 50 individual supervision hours.

All candidates must enroll in PY005 Facilitation Skills in order to complete the supervised fieldwork training requirements.

CELA’s ICAF and ICAT Certification Programs meet the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association (IEATA) supervision and training from an Expressive Arts Institute requirement for the Registered Expressive Arts Consultant/Educator (REACE) credential and the Registered Expressive Arts Therapist (REAT) credential.
